From the CD-ROM "le Parcemin, Dr. Florent Foisy, who traced the life of Martin until his death wrote: "After arriving in Quebec, he had to land in Champlain, north of Trois Rivieres and south of Batiscan. While there, he first married Jeanne Bouchar at Cap-de-la-Madeleine in 1665. She died early, without having any children. In 1667, the census stated that he was 24 years of age, Jeanne Bouchar his wife was 18. They had two heads of cattle, 30 acres of land and were living in Champlain.
By 1764 [date as recorded in Foisy surname search but I doubt it - probably around 1670] he remarried Madeleine Baudoin, in Trois-Rivieres and three children were born in Champlain: Louis, Antoine, and Claude. In 1683 he left his family in Champlain and along with 13 others, went to Illinois, near Chicago without gaining much success. They were attacked, robbed, and made prisoners by the Iriquois. Finally, the Escoumin tribe helped them back home in 1684.
In 1686, Martin moved his family to the island of Montreal, near what is now Saint Gabriel Street in Old Montreal. The three children born there were: Marie-Francoise, Marie-Louise, and Jacques. By 1692 he leased a farm from Michel Messier at Cat St.-Michel, Varennes. The four last children saw light there, namely: Marie-Madeleine, Catherine, Augustin, and another Catherine. Again, in 1697, he moved to Iles Bouchard, Saint-Sulpice, and farmed there for a few years until he made his final displacement to the Seignerie de Vercheres. Martin Foisy passed away in 1729 on January 12, and was buried the next day at Vercheres.
From the book "Our French-Canadian Ancestors" by Thomas Laforest, 1st edition, Palm Harbor, Florida, 1983, a record of some of the 13 traveling companions to Illinois is found: "Jean Pilote... had become a Coureur de Bois. Aubert de Chesnaye was his employer in 1683. Eustache Prevost, second son of Our Ancestor Desrosiers, Martin Foisy, Laurent Benoit dit Livernois, and others, formed the circle of his companions en route to the Illinois. (15) On May 8 1684, 200 Iroquois attacked 7 canoes loaded with furs. The men in charge showed their letters of permission signed by M. de la Durantaye and M. le Chevalier de Baugy. The Indians didn't care to listen: "This is our country", they kept repeating. After pillaging the canoes, they made prisoners of the entire flotilla, including Jean Pilote. After 9 days of marching, the group approached Fort Saint-Louis de Illinois, where the Coureurs des Bois were released 'without provisions, without canoes, no arms other than two old guns with a little powder and lead.' Oh, what resourcefulness! On the 28th of May following they were on the plain before Quebec. (16) (Laforest. 983, pp. 136-137.) #16 in the bibliography is from the following source: Nos Racines: L'Histoire Vivante des Quebecois. 395 Boul., Lebeau, Saint-Laurent, P.Q. Canada. H4N1S2. Vol ume 12, p. 284. The reference for #15 was only imperfectly copied: Volume 31, page 120 from ....Quebec, Compiled originally...committee, Lachine, Quebec.....Ancestors in this book.....charming set of charcoal...permission of the Labatt..... The book "Our French-Canadian Ancestors" was found in the genealogical research section of the Brunswick-Glynn Memorial Library on Gloucester Street, Brunswick, Georgia.
